Kinja'd!!!

I was out shooting in St. Petersburg on Saturday afternoon (when I got the shots for the wrecking ball GIF). As I reached a particular part of the route I was walking, I came across what is pictured above.

It’s part of the inside curb for turn five of the Grand Prix Of St. Petersburg street track. For most of the year, when it’s not a race track, this curb lives in a parking lot. When it is a race track, this is what the corner looks like.

The curb in question is just out of the shot. The McLaren is about to clip it.

I love that when I’m out in downtown that I can come across little reminders of the races. And every once in while, if you know how to get there and there’s no traffic, you can cut through a parking lot that spits you out just before turn two. And again, if there is no traffic, and a particular traffic light is green, you can floor it through what are turns two and three.

I just get excited knowing these things are around that most people probably don’t notice.

So the curb picture... I really liked the lines, colors, and textures but thought the sideways perspective really gave it some depth and made it much more interesting.

If you are interested in seeing the other pictures I took that day, they can be found here:

Nice shot! I lack any photography skills this simple shot is the kind of thing I never capture. Really like it.

A good way to learn is to take a shot you think looks nice, assume it’s not perfect, change the camera settings slightly, take the same shot, and repeat a few times. Then pick the one you like best.

I hang out with some professional photographers, and even they only keep about 1/10 Of their pictures, if that.

This is exactly how I’ve been teaching myself. I did research on how to use the camera and what the settings should do so I can at least pretend, then started taking the same shot over and over haha

Digital has made the learning curve a fast sweeper rather than the Monoco hairpin. I’ll take several shots of the same thing; sometimes with different settings, or sometimes I’ll just take one step to the side to change the the angle or perspective just a bit.

If you want to step up your photography game, just google something like “10 Tips For Taking Better Pictures” as a starting point. And just go out and shoot. Figure out what works and what doesn’t. And have fun! I love the challenge of walking around, looking for somthing to shoot. Plus you force yourself to get out and walk around, maybe see something you haven’t see before.

You should go. It’s a really well organized event. It’s right on the water in this middle of downtown. I have an absolute blast each year. And if you know where to go, there are some places you can stand that are probably the closest you can get to a race car traveling at speed on a track. There are few other tracks that let you get that close. It’s amazing.

Honestly part of my problem is I’m mostly shooting from a dji phantom 3 pro. Lots of settings but once I get in the air I mess with it then just start flying around yelling weeeeeeeeee!
